About Lake Tehuacana State Park

Located near the town of Tehuacana in Limestone County, Texas, Lake Tehuacana State Park encompasses a 142-acre lake and surrounding parkland covering approximately 232 acres. The park lies within rolling hills and open woodlands typical of the East Texas Prairie region, featuring post oak, blackjack oak, and various native grasses. Established in 1977, the park offers visitors a quiet retreat for a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, camping, hiking, and paddling. The lake is regularly stocked with largemouth bass, sunfish, and catfish, making it a popular local fishing destination. Birdwatchers will appreciate sightings of waterfowl, great blue herons, and an assortment of migratory songbirds that use the lake as a stopover. Hiking trails meander through wooded areas and provide vantage points overlooking the water. Camping facilities include sites with electric hookups and primitive spots, catering to both tent campers and RV visitors. The park was originally developed to provide recreational access to the lake, which itself was created in the mid-20th century for water supply and flood control. Today, Lake Tehuacana State Park remains a peaceful, lesser-known destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a natural escape not far from Waco and Dallas-Fort Worth metro areas. The park’s relatively small size and gentle terrain make it well suited for day trips, weekend camping, and wildlife observation. Seasonal wildflowers bloom in spring, while mild Texas winters allow year-round enjoyment. Visitor amenities include picnic areas, boat ramps, and a seasonal park store. Overall, Lake Tehuacana State Park offers diverse recreation in a tranquil lakefront environment with attractive natural habitats in the East Texas landscape.
